What is Internal Family Systems Therapy?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a psychotherapy method that centers around several sub-personalities, or families, located within an individual’s mind. Each of these families has unique qualities and actions.
While one sub-part may contain wounded and suppressed emotions, such as shame or anger, another part may try to shield or control the person from experiencing those painful emotions. Although the various families can communicate, the sub-parts often contradict one another.
Creating more internal turbulence, the families even rebel against the core Self, the caring and capable inner foundation within every individual.
How Does IFS Therapy Work?
The IFS model regains a healthy and harmonious mental space by healing the wounded sub-parts and developing different dynamics for the families and the Self to amicably interact.
Through IFS, a licensed psychotherapist will lead patients to identify and manage the various families to obtain a centered Self.
The IFS format includes:
- Releasing the sub-parts from their damaging roles
- Relearning how to put the Self in charge through trust
- Restoring harmony by allowing the Self to manage sub-parts
Who Can Be Helped Through IFS?
IFS is beneficial for individuals, couples and families facing certain conditions and their symptoms, including:
